ChatGPT Reddit citations have nearly disappeared on the US retail and travel prompts we track, and the same two-step drop hit both industries in the same weeks. That pattern points to a change in how ChatGPT picks sources, but only OpenAI can say whether it’s an algorithm change.
In GrowByData Compass, Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations fell from 15.05% to 0.14% in retail and from 13.11% to 0.04% in travel between the weeks of May 17 and September 20, 2026. It hasn’t recovered. Press coverage has focused on an August drop, which leaves the earlier slide from late May unexplained.
Reddit wasn’t the only open source to fall. Wikipedia dropped in both panels, while reviewers and publishers gained in retail and hotel brands’ own sites gained in travel. Google AI Overviews didn’t follow, so the shift is specific to ChatGPT.
How we measured this
- Source: GrowByData Compass, GrowByData Retail Industry Panel and GrowByData Travel Industry Panel.
- Scope: US prompts across 12 metro markets plus a national view. Retail prompt categories include home and furniture, apparel and fashion, beauty and personal care, electronics and tech, and toys and games. The travel panel spans hotels, resorts, vacations, getaways and seasonal trips.
- Platforms: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, plus Perplexity for the earlier window only.
- Timeframe: weekly readings from May 12 to September 26, 2026, pulled September 28 to 29. Before and after comparisons use May 12 to June 11 and August 28 to September 27, 2026. The last full week is the week starting September 20.
- Sample: ChatGPT prompt runs were 4,733 and 4,771 in retail, and 2,380 and 2,385 in travel, for the two comparison windows.
- Metric: citation share is the share of a platform’s citations that Compass attributes to a domain in the period, as reported by Compass.
- Limits: Compass reports domains from a list we supply, so domains outside our candidate list may also have gained. Perplexity collection was too thin in the later window to report. Compass measures citations, not whether ChatGPT read a page it didn’t cite.
- Google caveats: AI Overview prompt runs fell in the later window, and since July 24, 2026, Compass can’t expand collapsed AI Overview content. AI Mode citation capture dropped from late August.
Is OpenAI changing how ChatGPT picks citations?
Probably something changed in how ChatGPT selects sources, but only OpenAI can say whether that’s a citation algorithm change. Two separate industry panels show the same two-step drop in the same weeks, and Reddit and Wikipedia fell together. OpenAI reportedly says it doesn’t set visibility for individual sites.
| Evidence | What we see | Points toward |
|---|---|---|
| Same two steps in both industries | Reddit fell 63% (retail) and 77% (travel) from May 17 to June 21, then 90% and 88% from August 2 to August 16. Two prompt sets, same weeks | A platform-level change |
| Open and community sources fell together | Reddit and Wikipedia fell in both panels, and YouTube fell in retail | A change in source selection, not a Reddit-only rule |
| Gains went to category-specific domains | Reviewers and publishers in retail, hotel brands in travel | Source selection that favors authoritative domains |
| Google AI Overviews held | Reddit’s share didn’t fall there in the same windows | A ChatGPT-specific shift |
| OpenAI’s reported statement | It doesn’t set fixed visibility for individual sites, and Reddit is still cited (single source, Yahoo Tech) | Unclear. It cuts against a Reddit-specific rule, not a broader change |
| The reported August 8 search change | Fits the second step in time, but not the first | Unclear. It can’t be the whole story |
| Cited versus consulted | Our panels see citations only, not what ChatGPT read | Unclear |
Evidence read as of October 1, 2026. Compass, GrowByData Retail and Travel Industry Panels, ChatGPT, US prompts. Press and OpenAI items are from web results, not a full news audit.
An algorithm change is one reading of that evidence. A shift in how ChatGPT searches, which sources it trusts for a category, or which pages it can retrieve would look similar from outside. Our data shows the effect, not the cause.
How far did Reddit’s ChatGPT citations fall?
As of the week of September 20, 2026, Reddit held 0.14% of ChatGPT citations on retail prompts and 0.04% on travel prompts, down from 15.05% and 13.11% in the week of May 17. Neither has topped 0.43% in any full week since mid-August.
| Week starting | Retail: Reddit share of ChatGPT citations | Travel: Reddit share of ChatGPT citations |
|---|---|---|
| May 17, 2026 | 15.05% | 13.11% |
| June 21, 2026 | 5.52% | 3.03% |
| July 19, 2026 | 4.66% | 5.02% |
| August 2, 2026 | 3.12% | 2.96% |
| August 9, 2026 | 1.47% | 1.22% |
| August 16, 2026 | 0.31% | 0.36% |
| September 20, 2026 | 0.14% | 0.04% |
Selected weeks. Source: GrowByData Compass, GrowByData Retail and Travel Industry Panels, ChatGPT, US prompts. Weeks start on Sunday.
Comparing May 12 to June 11 with August 28 to September 27, Reddit’s share fell from 11.95% (7,622 citations) to 0.27% (266) on retail prompts and from 10.78% (3,521) to 0.11% (59) on travel prompts. Prompt runs held steady in both windows.
When did the shift start?
The decline started in late May 2026, more than two months before the August drop that made the news. Between the weeks of May 17 and June 21, Reddit’s ChatGPT citation share fell 63% on retail prompts and 77% on travel prompts, then held at roughly 3% to 6% through July.
| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| May 17 to June 21 | Step 1: Reddit’s share fell 63% (retail) and 77% (travel) | Compass |
| June 21 to August 2 | Share held at roughly 3% to 6% | Compass |
| August 2 to August 16 | Step 2: share fell 90% (retail) and 88% (travel) | Compass |
| August 8 | Reported change in how ChatGPT searches the web | Forbes, citing vendor data |
| August 19 | First press report of an 86% fall, called provisional | Search Engine Land |
| August 20 | Wider coverage, including Reddit’s response and OpenAI’s reported statement | Forbes, Axios, Yahoo Tech |
| September 7 | Coverage questions whether a missing citation means missing influence | Cybernews |
| After the week of August 16 | No full week above 0.43% (retail) or 0.25% (travel) | Compass |
The second step matches the press reports. An AI visibility vendor’s data, covered by Search Engine Land on August 19, showed Reddit’s share of citations in cited ChatGPT responses falling from 3.83% (July 18 to August 7) to 0.52% (August 14 to 17). The report called the findings provisional and said a data collection issue couldn’t be ruled out.
Our panels show the same cliff on our own prompts, collected independently. Press figures use a different prompt set and a different metric, so compare the direction and timing, not the absolute share.
Which sources gained as Reddit fell in ChatGPT?
In retail, gains were spread across reviewers, publishers and a few retailers, led by rtings.com, nbcnews.com and goodhousekeeping.com. In travel, hotel brands’ own sites captured a large share of the gains we measured. Reddit and Wikipedia fell in both panels.

Share of ChatGPT citations on US prompts. Gainers shown are the six largest per industry; losers shown are Reddit, Wikipedia and selected others. Source: GrowByData Compass, GrowByData Retail and Travel Industry Panels. Retail: 4,733 and 4,771 prompt runs. Travel: 2,380 and 2,385.
No single domain inherited Reddit’s share. In retail, all nine gainers in our pull add up to about 5.5 points, under half of the 11.7 points Reddit lost, and domains outside our candidate list may account for more. Not every review site gained: tomsguide.com and techradar.com both lost share.
The travel shift was different from retail. Four hotel brands (Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and IHG) more than tripled their combined citation share, from 3.96% to 13.71%, a gain of 9.75 points. In our travel panel, the citation mix shifted away from Reddit and Wikipedia and toward hotel brands’ first-party domains.
Reddit lost 10.67 points in the same panel. That’s a close match to the hotel gains, but our data doesn’t show one-for-one substitution.
One prompt shows how sharp the shift can be
Compass ran “Which brand makes the best home theater system for a small living room?” 16 times in each window.
| Domain | May 12 to Jun 11 | Aug 28 to Sep 27 |
|---|---|---|
| reddit.com | 13 citations (10.23%) | 0 |
| rtings.com | 0 | 96 citations (24.88%) |
After the shift, the next most-cited domains were whathifi.com (14), techradar.com (12), sonos.com (12), tomsguide.com (9) and bestbuy.com (7). Reddit dropped out and a review site led, with other reviewers, a manufacturer and a retailer behind it. This is one prompt, not a retail-wide pattern.

Is Google’s AI still citing Reddit?
Yes, on AI Overviews. In the same panels, Reddit’s share of Google AI Overview citations went from 6.60% to 7.98% on retail prompts and from 4.93% to 5.12% on travel prompts between the two windows. AI Overview prompt runs fell in the later window, so treat those figures as directional.

Google AI Mode is harder to read. Retail AI Mode read 6.73% and 6.54%, but citation capture dropped in the later window, so the after figure is unreliable. In travel, AI Mode slid gradually from 4.85% in May to 2.33% in August, before that capture drop.
Other data also shows no ChatGPT-style collapse on AI Overviews. The vendor data cited by Forbes found only a gradual slip, from about 2.5% in early July to about 2.1% in August.
Reddit went to near zero on one engine and held or rose on another over the same weeks. That’s why our Google AI Overviews monitoring and ChatGPT brand monitoring report each platform separately.
What has OpenAI said about the change?
OpenAI hasn’t explained the drop in the coverage we reviewed. Yahoo Tech reported on August 20 that it says it doesn’t set a fixed level of visibility for individual websites and that Reddit is still cited. Forbes reported that, per the vendor’s data, ChatGPT changed how it searches the web on August 8.
The reported August 8 search change may explain the second step. It can’t explain the first.
Per the vendor’s data in the Forbes report, background searches scoped to a single domain with the “site:” operator jumped from 0.37% to 16.8% of all background searches in one day. Average background searches per response rose from about 1.08 to 1.83.
A search process that queries specific domains more often could favor authoritative, category-specific sources, which would fit the reviewers in retail and the hotel brands in travel. That’s a plausible reading, not a confirmed one, and our data can’t see ChatGPT’s background searches to test it.
The statement matters here. If OpenAI doesn’t set visibility for individual sites, a Reddit-specific rule is less likely than a broader change in how sources are found and chosen. That’s still an inference from a single, unattributed report.
Does ChatGPT still use Reddit if it doesn’t cite it?
Possibly, and nobody outside OpenAI can say. Cybernews pointed out on September 7 that a source can inform an answer during ChatGPT’s research without earning a visible citation. Citation share measures what users see credited, not what shaped the answer.
Our panels measure citations only. A missing citation doesn’t prove Reddit’s influence on your brand’s ChatGPT answers ended, and it doesn’t prove it continues. Track what ChatGPT says about your brand alongside what it cites.
Does Reddit still matter for AI visibility?
Yes, but its role now depends on the platform. In our panels, Reddit is nearly absent from visible ChatGPT citations yet still holds 5% to 8% of Google AI Overview citations, on fewer runs than before. That makes Reddit visibility a poor standalone KPI.
Reddit’s own position points the same way. Its Chief Communications Officer said in Axios on August 20 that treating Reddit as a hack for AI platform presence risks frustrating its own users, and that its value lies in real conversations about your brand today.
Measure Reddit separately by platform, and keep visible citations apart from community and brand outcomes. Any program built on one engine’s citation habits carries platform risk, and ChatGPT just showed how fast those habits can change.
What should marketing teams check now?
Split AI visibility reporting by platform and by week, and re-baseline any ChatGPT comparison that spans June to August. Then find out which domains gained in your category and tighten the pages they pull from. The gainers differ by industry, so a generic playbook won’t fit.
- Split reporting by platform. Track ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode separately. A blended score would have hidden a collapse on one engine and a hold on another.
- Re-baseline Q2 against Q3. Any ChatGPT comparison that spans June to August includes both steps, so treat late August onward as the new baseline.
- Map who gained in your category. In retail, check which reviewers ChatGPT now cites for your products. Rtings.com led our home theater example, but other categories will differ.
- Check your first-party pages. If brand sites are gaining in your category, as hotel brands did in our travel panel, make sure your product or property pages answer buyer questions clearly on the page.
- Watch weekly. The August step took two weeks, and a monthly report would have caught it late.
For the next 30 days, watch whether Reddit’s citation share shows a sustained week-over-week recovery, whether OpenAI says more about the change, and whether AI Mode citation capture stabilizes.

Frequently asked questions
Could the Reddit drop be a data collection issue?
It’s possible in any single vendor’s dataset, and the first press report said it couldn’t rule that out. Our panels show the same direction on their own prompts, in two industries, week after week. That points to a real change in what ChatGPT credits, though we can’t see why it changed.
Did Perplexity also drop Reddit?
We can’t say yet. Perplexity collection in our panels was too thin between August 28 and September 27, 2026 to report a reliable share. From May 12 to June 11, Reddit held 2.72% of Perplexity citations on US retail prompts.
Will Reddit’s ChatGPT citations come back?
Nobody outside OpenAI can say. It reportedly says Reddit is still cited and hasn’t said whether levels will change. Every full week after August 16 stayed under 0.5% in our panels, so check weekly rather than waiting for an announcement.
How can I see which sources ChatGPT cites for my category?
You need prompt-level tracking that records every cited domain, run repeatedly across your chosen markets and devices. GrowByData Compass tracks citations in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Perplexity, so you can see which domains gained as Reddit fell for your prompts.
