Reddit Gets 7% of Retail AI Overview Citations

We tracked 5,399,894 AI Overview citations across 25 retail product categories between April 1 and June 30, 2026. Reddit accounted for 381,145 of them, or 7.06%. Only YouTube ranked higher, at 13.81%.

An AI Overview citation is a source link Google attaches to the generated answer block at the top of the results page. It is not an organic ranking. Google awards it on different logic, it sits in different page real estate, and most enterprise reporting stacks do not record it. If you want the mechanics of how the block itself is assembled, we covered that separately in our guide to Google AI Overviews.

The reason we ran this analysis is a mismatch we kept seeing in client reporting. Reddit’s organic Share of Voice in apparel over this period was 0.90%. Its AI Overview share in the same category was 7.92%. Those two numbers describe the same keyword set on the same days, and they disagree by a factor of nine.

How we measured this

The data comes from GrowByData’s Retail Industry Panel, an always-on tracking set covering apparel, beauty and personal care, home furnishings, food and beverage, consumer electronics, toys, office equipment, gifts, and 17 other retail categories. US results only.

For every tracked keyword, we captured each AI Overview citation with its source domain, its position inside the answer block, its absolute position on the page, and whether it rendered above the fold. Share of Voice here means a domain’s listings within a SERP feature divided by total listings in that feature. Our full definition of that calculation is in the Google Share of Voice guide, and the same method applies to every feature we track.

Total AI Overview citation universe for the period: 5,399,894.

Citation share by domain

Domain AI Overview citations Share of all retail AIO citations
youtube.com 745,807 13.81%
reddit.com 381,145 7.06%
facebook.com 127,773 2.37%
instagram.com 85,734 1.59%
quora.com 60,785 1.13%
tiktok.com 48,009 0.89%
pinterest.com 6,636 0.12%
x.com 760 0.01%
Combined 1,456,650 26.98%

User-generated platforms take 26.98% of retail AI Overview citations. Reddit and YouTube together take 20.87%.

That leaves about 73% of citation inventory for everyone else, and everyone else includes retailers, brands, publishers, review sites, and Google’s own properties competing for the same slots. The largest single block of citation supply in retail search belongs to platforms that sell nothing in the category.

Reddit’s citation share and its organic share do not match

In apparel, Reddit recorded 45,200 AI Overview citations against 3,419 organic listings. Its organic Share of Voice was 0.90%, which put it third among social platforms and behind Pinterest. A rank report covering the same apparel keywords would show Reddit as noise.

Beauty and personal care shows the same gap with different weighting. Reddit took 6.78% of AI Overview citations and 3.89% of organic listings. Stronger organic presence than apparel, and still a citation share roughly 74% larger than its organic share.

We think this is the practical version of a shift a lot of teams have discussed in the abstract: top-ten organic position has stopped predicting whether a domain gets pulled into the generated answer. Entity authority and citable answer structures are separate levers from the ones that move rank. We wrote about the measurement side of that gap in SERP monitoring vs rank tracking, and about why position data alone stopped being sufficient for enterprise reporting in why keyword tracking alone isn’t enough for enterprise.

For a Director of SEO, the operational consequence is narrow and specific. Visibility is moving in a layer your current reporting does not render, so the loss shows up in traffic before it shows up in any dashboard.

Where those citations actually sit on the page

This is the part that changed our reading of the whole dataset.

Reddit generated 45,200 AI Overview citations in apparel. Of those, 292 rendered above the fold. That is 0.65%. Average absolute position on the page was 20.83.

Beauty performed slightly better and is still lopsided: 74,201 citations, 1,176 above the fold, 1.58%, average absolute position 17.30.

So Reddit gets cited at very high volume and displayed at very low prominence. Most of those citations sit inside expanded answer blocks or far down the page, in positions a user would have to work to reach.

Two readings follow, and which one applies depends on what you are trying to protect.

If you are defending traffic, the Reddit threat is smaller than the citation count implies. Almost none of that visibility becomes a link a user actually sees.

If you are defending how your product gets described, it is larger. Those citations feed the summary. A Reddit thread cited at absolute position 22 still contributed to the answer text sitting at position 1, and the user reads the answer without ever scrolling to the source.

Presence-only tracking overstates the threat. Click-based tracking misses it. What you need is placement data, which is why Google AI Overviews monitoring has to record position inside the block and not just whether a domain appeared. The same principle applies across the other answer surfaces we track, including Google AI Mode monitoring.

Category variation

Reddit’s citation share is not uniform. It moves by a factor of six across the 25 categories.

Category size does not explain the spread. Beauty is our largest category by citation volume and sits mid-table at 6.78%, while musical instruments is one of the smallest and tops the list at 12.46%.

What the high-share categories have in common is deliberation. Musical instruments, hobby gear, and gift selection all involve a buyer who wants another person’s opinion before spending. The low-share categories are fast or occasion-driven purchases. Flowers at 1.94% and decor at 2.48% are the two weakest in the panel, and neither has much of a community around the buying decision.

Beauty is worth a second look because it behaves differently on the paid side of the same results page. We found a similar concentration pattern when we analysed beauty industry Google Shopping Ads last year, where a small number of domains held a disproportionate share of the ad inventory.

The feature Reddit actually owns

Discussion and Forums is a distinct SERP feature, separate from both organic and AI Overviews. Reddit took 55.38% of every Discussion and Forums listing in apparel and 55.45% in beauty. When it appears, it lands at average feature position 1.40 in apparel and 1.41 in beauty, and it holds the top slot in roughly 61% of appearances. Quora is the only meaningful challenger, and only in apparel at 28.5%.

The feature is small, which limits what that dominance is worth. Discussion and Forums carried 9,269 total listings in apparel against 570,759 AI Overview listings. Owning it outright is a signal about how Google reads Reddit, not a traffic channel.

We do think it functions as a leading indicator. Google surfaced Discussion and Forums 3.7 times more often in beauty results than in apparel over the same window, and beauty is also where Reddit’s organic strength is highest. Where Google trusts forum content enough to give it a dedicated block, it appears to cite that content more heavily elsewhere on the page. That is a correlation across two categories, so treat it as a hypothesis rather than a finding.

Both of these are features most teams do not track at all. If you are not currently capturing them, our breakdowns of Google SERP features and the What People Are Saying SERP feature cover what they look like and where they render.

What this data cannot tell you

Four limits worth stating before anyone builds a strategy on these numbers.

The panel does not include retailer or brand domains, only the platform set. We can report that Reddit holds 7.06% of retail AI Overview citations. We cannot tell you it took those citations from any particular brand, because we did not track brand domains in this configuration.

This is one quarter with no trend line. We do not know whether 7.06% represents growth, decline, or a stable state. We are running the Q1 comparison now.

Citation counts are not traffic. Google does not report clicks on AI Overview citations, so nothing here quantifies what any of this visibility is worth in sessions.

Coverage is US results and our own keyword set, not a census of retail search. A different keyword mix would move these numbers, probably by a few points in either direction.

What to do with this

The first change is a reporting one. If your quarterly deck shows average position and nothing else, it is describing a shrinking portion of the page. Add citation share for your commercial keywords and track how the domain mix moves month over month. Our walkthrough of how to track SERP features covers the setup, and enterprise SERP tracking is the underlying capability.

Second, record placement rather than presence. A citation at absolute position 21 is not equivalent to one at position 3, and a report that treats them the same will misread both Reddit and your actual competitors.

Third, look at the specific Reddit threads being cited for your terms. Not a monitoring subscription across the whole platform, which mostly produces volume. Pull the threads Google actually draws from for your top twenty commercial queries, read the sentiment, and decide whether it is something you can influence through community participation, a product fix, or a support response. Where that sentiment matters for the brand rather than a single keyword, brand intelligence is the better lens.

Fourth, stop running AI visibility and search visibility as separate programs. One query returns organic listings, an AI Overview, shopping units, and a forum block, all competing for the same intent. Measuring those across three tools gives you three partial answers. Unifying paid, organic, shopping, and AI visibility in one view is what LLM Intelligence is built for, and the broader context sits in our AI search visibility guide.

One thing to note if you are extending this beyond Google: citation behaviour differs by platform. The domains cited in AI Overviews are not the same set cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity for equivalent queries. If Google is where you start, the methods in track brand mentions in ChatGPT and track brand mentions in Perplexity AI cover the adjacent surfaces.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of Google AI Overview citations go to Reddit?

Reddit received 7.06% of all AI Overview citations across retail search between April 1 and June 30, 2026, based on 5,399,894 tracked citations across 25 retail product categories. YouTube was the only domain ahead of it, at 13.81%.

Why doesn’t Reddit appear in my rank tracking if it dominates AI Overviews?

AI Overview citations are a separate inventory from organic rankings. Reddit held 7.92% of AI Overview citations in apparel while holding 0.90% of organic Share of Voice in the same category over the same period. Standard rank tracking measures organic position only, so it records Reddit as negligible even where Reddit is a top-two source for the generated answer.

Which retail categories does Reddit dominate in AI Overviews?

Reddit’s citation share is highest in considered-purchase categories with active enthusiast communities: musical instruments at 12.46%, gifts at 11.35%, and books, music and video at 10.61%. It is lowest in fast or occasion-driven categories, specifically flowers at 1.94% and decor at 2.48%.

Does a high Reddit citation share mean Reddit is taking my traffic?

Not directly. In apparel, only 292 of Reddit’s 45,200 AI Overview citations rendered above the fold, so most of that visibility never becomes a link a user sees. The effect is on how the generated answer describes your category, not on click diversion.

Summary

Reddit takes 7.06% of retail AI Overview citations while holding under 1% organic Share of Voice in apparel. YouTube takes 13.81%. Together with the other platforms in the set, user-generated content accounts for 26.98% of retail citation inventory.

None of that appears in a standard rank report, and roughly 1% of it appears above the fold. Both facts are true at once, which is why the correct response is better instrumentation rather than alarm. Measure citation share alongside position, record where those citations land, and decide from there whether your category has a Reddit problem or just a Reddit presence.
