Who’s Winning the Ad Slot in ChatGPT Travel Searches?

chatgpt ads in travel industry

ChatGPT ads in travel are far more common than in the B2B SaaS prompt set we tested in September. Most of the volume arrived in the last eleven days of our window, and Expedia took the biggest share.

Our view: travel marketers should treat ChatGPT as a live ad auction now, not a test. Most answers carry one ad at most, the brand in that slot changes week to week, and booking sites are already showing up under the questions travelers ask about hotel brands.

The Short Answer. Across 150 travel prompts tracked in GrowByData Compass, ChatGPT showed 423 sponsored placements in 2,248 US searches between September 12 and October 11, 2026. That’s about 19 ads per 100 searches. Expedia held 22.46% of placements, Marriott and Inspirato 7.09% each, and 117 advertisers appeared at least once.

How Many ChatGPT Ads Do Travel Searches Get?

The rate wasn’t steady. It averaged about 8.5 ads per 100 searches from September 12 to 30, then about 34 per 100 from October 1 to 11.

For context, our earlier test on a B2B SaaS prompt set (44 prompts, New York, August 26 to September 24, 2026) logged about 5 ads per 100 searches. Travel’s September rate was about 1.7 times that, and the full-month rate nearly four times, mostly because of October. The prompt sets, regions and dates differ, so read it as a direction, not a benchmark.

Compass classifies nearly all 150 prompts as informational, questions like “Which hotel brands offer the best pet-friendly accommodations?” Advertisers are buying into the research stage, well before anyone picks a date.

Which Travel Brands Advertise in ChatGPT?

Expedia was the largest advertiser GrowByData Compass saw on our travel prompts from September 12 to October 11, 2026, with 95 of 423 sponsored placements (22.46%) across 73 of 150 prompts. Marriott and Inspirato followed at 7.09% each. The top five advertisers held 46% of placements, and 68 of 117 advertisers appeared only once.

Advertiser Placements Share of Placements Prompts With an Ad
Expedia 95 22.46% 73
Marriott 30 7.09% 29
Inspirato 30 7.09% 20
Super.com 24 5.67% 21
Wyndham Business 16 3.78% 13
Grand Geneva Resort 10 2.36% 7
Montage Hotels & Resorts 9 2.13% 7
Trivago 8 1.89% 8
Delta Vacations 7 1.65% 7
Brush Creek Ranch 7 1.65% 7

Share is each advertiser’s portion of the 423 placements we observed. Advertiser names are as Compass recorded them; “Marriott Bonvoy” (1 placement) and “Wyndham” (1) appear separately.

Grouped by business model, booking sites (Expedia, Super.com, Trivago, Priceline and Kayak) took 131 placements, 31% of the total. The big hotel groups (Marriott, Wyndham, Hilton, Choice and IHG) took 55, or 13%. The rest went to single resorts, cruise lines such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean, tour operators and a long tail of niche brands (our grouping, not Compass’s).

Booking.com and Airbnb didn’t show up in any of the 423 placements. Skift reported in February 2026 that Booking.com and Expedia both already had apps inside ChatGPT, yet only Expedia bought ads in our sample. We can’t tell whether that’s a choice or timing.

Some advertisers weren’t travel brands at all. Work-travel prompts drew coworking brands such as Outsite and Regus, and the list also includes The Black Tux, Shutterfly and Jotform, so watching only your direct competitors will miss part of the field.

Why Did ChatGPT Ads in Travel Jump in October?

Ad volume rose from about 4 per 100 searches in the last days of September to about 41 per 100 from October 8 to 11, 2026. Each step up came from one advertiser arriving in force: Super.com first, then Marriott, then Expedia.

Searches and placements by period are derived from Compass share figures and may be off by one or two. They add up to the 30-day totals.

Marriott logged 29 placements from October 4 to 7 and almost none outside those four days. Expedia then logged 73 placements from October 8 to 11, on 61 different prompts, so for those four days an Expedia ad sat under about one in four answers on our travel prompts.

Almost every ad we logged sat in the first sponsored position, which suggests most answers carried a single ad. When one brand ramps up, it takes the slot from everyone else, and a monthly average hides that.

We don’t know what drove the jump. The GrowByData Retail Industry Panel’s ad rate rose the same week, from about 11 per 100 searches (September 12 to October 3) to about 48 per 100 (October 4 to 11), so part of the change looks platform-wide rather than travel-specific. OpenAI hasn’t announced anything for that week that we could find.

Do ChatGPT Travel Ads Match What ChatGPT Recommends?

Travel ads often come from brands the answer doesn’t recommend, and booking sites are the clearest case. Take one travel prompt, “Which hotel brands offer the best pet-friendly accommodations?” It ran six times from October 1 to 11, 2026. Three runs carried an ad: Marriott on October 7 and Expedia on October 9 and 11. Expedia never appeared in the list of recommended brands on any run.

Run Date (2026) Brands Recommended (Sample) Sponsored Ad
Oct 1 Hilton, Hyatt, Kimpton, Marriott Bonvoy, Staybridge Suites None
Oct 3 Kimpton, La Quinta, Loews, Motel 6, Red Roof Inn and others None
Oct 5 Aloft, Kimpton, La Quinta, Loews, Motel 6, Red Roof None
Oct 7 Aloft, Hilton, Kimpton, La Quinta by Wyndham, Loews and others Marriott
Oct 9 Aloft Hotels, Best Western, Kimpton, Loews Hotels, Motel 6 and others Expedia
Oct 11 Aloft Hotels, Candlewood Suites, Kimpton, Motel 6, Red Roof Inn and others Expedia

Brands are the ones Compass recorded in each answer’s recommendation list. OpenAI says ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s answers.

A traveler asking which hotel brand to book saw an online travel agency under the answer on two of six runs. Expedia doesn’t need to be the answer. It needs to be the next click. For hotel brands, that’s the ChatGPT version of an OTA bidding on your brand terms, and nothing in your own ad account will show it.

Hilton’s brands came up in several of these six answers, but Hilton never bought the slot on this prompt.

What Should Travel Marketers Do About ChatGPT Ads?

Track ads by week, on the research questions your guests ask, and read every ad against the organic answer above it.

  1. Build prompts from guest questions, not booking terms. All 150 prompts here are research questions, and they drew 19 ads per 100 searches.
  2. Report by week, and keep the empty runs. Monthly averages hid the wave pattern here, and empty runs are what let you say how often a competitor shows up.
  3. Watch the booking sites, not just other hotels. Your competition for a guest’s question may be Expedia or Super.com, not the chain across the street.
  4. Compare paid and organic on the same prompt. Your brand in the answer with a rival’s ad underneath is a conquesting signal. A rival’s ad where nobody owns the answer is a gap you could take organically.
  5. Check that your team can see ads at all. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts don’t get ads, according to OpenAI’s Help Center. A marketer checking from a Business workspace will see nothing and assume nobody’s buying.

Methodology & limitations

Source: GrowByData Compass, tracking 150 travel prompts across hotels, resorts, getaways, weddings, wellness and pet travel.

Period: September 12 to October 11, 2026. US, logged-out ChatGPT sessions. The dataset includes 2,248 searches.

Measurement: One placement equals one sponsored ad observed in one search. Advertiser share is the percentage of all observed sponsored placements attributed to that advertiser.

Limitations: This analysis covers one fixed travel prompt set and logged-out US sessions, not all ChatGPT travel activity. We cannot see advertiser bids, spend or clicks. Thirteen placements appeared below the first sponsored position and may not represent standard sponsored ad cards.

Most hotel marketers learn an OTA is advertising under their brand’s ChatGPT answers from a guest, not a report. If you’d rather find out from your own data, book a demo or an audit for your travel prompts.
